Complete travel guide
Jaipur is the largest city in Rajasthan, but is one of the area’s newest cities. It was only built in the mid-1800s, as India’s first planned city. Today, it is a very popular tourist destination, thanks largely to its many historic attractions. In addition, it commonly serves as a convenient stepping stone to desert cities like Jaisalmer. Jaipur is often referred to as the pink city, due to the unique pink-red building colours.
Don’t Miss
If tourists want to see historic, Indian forts, then they should look no further than Jaipur. The breath-taking Amber Fort is only 11kms to the north of the city, and can be easily reached by van, car or bus. It is a huge complex that was a royal palace in the 1600s. Today, it houses several major sites like the sheesh mahal, and also offers visitors elephant riding facilities. Next to the Amber Fort is Jaighar Fort, considered to be the strongest of Jaipur’s forts. The smallest fort is Nahargarh. Inside here stands the incredible Madhavendra Palace.
Jaipur has some beautiful palaces which cannot be missed. The most famous is the City Palace. Featuring both Mughal and Rajput architecture, this complex is massive. The textile museum, Public Audience Hall and Private Audience Hall are among the most visited structures inside the complex. Visiting the sprawling courtyards and gardens is also recommended. One of the most iconic places in Jaipur is Jal Mahal. This stunning Rajput-style palace resides in the centre of Maan-sarovar Lake, and can be visited on most days.
Restaurants and Bars in Jaipur
Jaipur certainly has an abundance of restaurants. There are many different places to enjoy both traditional Indian meals and internationally-inspired cuisine. Plenty of famous dishes like butter chicken, dal makhani and samosas can be found throughout the city. Traditional Rajasthani food is also available in Jaipur. However, there isn’t much in the way of nightlife here and many of the restaurants in the city refuse to serve alcoholic beverages.
Jaipur has become famous for its rajais and jewels. There are many small traditional shops that sell the rajais cotton quilts. Chandi Ki Taksal is also the best place to find beautiful jewel shops. It rests in the north-eastern corner of the city centre. The city bazaar is also worth visiting, offering everything from food spices to tea leaves.
